Ishan and Pat shine at Chepauk to seal Playoff spot
Sunrisers Hyderabad sealed a terrific five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings in Match 63 of the TATA IPL 2026 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, successfully chasing down 181 with an over to spare to officially book their place in the playoffs.
After being put into the field, SRH struck at crucial moments to keep the hosts in check. Captain Pat Cummins led from the front, dismissing Sanju Samson early after a brisk cameo and later removing Ruturaj Gaikwad to stall the momentum in the middle overs. Sakib Hussain also impressed with a clever slower delivery to account for Urvil Patel.
As the innings progressed, SRH’s bowling unit maintained discipline through the middle and death overs. Kartik Sharma and Dewald Brevis threatened to accelerate, but timely breakthroughs ensured the scoring rate never spiralled out of control.
Cummins returned with exceptional figures of 3/28, his best of the season so far, while the rest of the attack backed him up to restrict CSK to 180/7.
Sunrisers Hyderabad approached the target with composure and control. Ishan Kishan anchored the innings beautifully with a magnificent 70 off 47 deliveries, blending smart strike rotation with authoritative strokeplay. Abhishek Sharma provided early momentum with a fluent 26 at the top.
The chase truly came alive once Heinrich Klaasen walked in and launched a counterattack that shifted the game decisively in SRH’s favour. He smashed 47 off just 26 deliveries with a flurry of boundaries and towering sixes. His aggressive approach dismantled the pressure of the chase and brought the equation firmly under control.
Despite a couple of late wickets, SRH comfortably crossed the finish line at 181 for 5 in 19 overs to secure a crucial win and confirm their playoff qualification. Ishan Kishan was named Player of the Match for his match-winning knock.
