Batters shine, but not our day in Bengaluru

It wasn’t meant to be for SunRisers Hyderabad at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in the TATA IPL 2026 season opener. Some impressive individual performances propelled us forward, but it wasn’t enough, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru won the match by six wickets.
We were asked to bat first after RCB won the toss earlier in the day. After losing a few early wickets, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen began rebuilding the innings with a good mix of caution and aggression. Kishan, captaining SRH for the first time, led by example, taking on the bowlers regularly to keep the scorecard ticking.
Klaasen anchored the innings with a terrific knock, and his partnership with Kishan put the team right back on top. Klaasen scored 31 off 22 balls, and the duo added 97 runs for the fourth wicket. Kishan continued the onslaught after completing his half-century, eventually finishing with 80 off 38 balls.
Aniket Verma showed great promise in his debut season in the lower order and returned this year with the same intent and explosiveness. He chipped in with a sensational 43 off 18 balls, helping SunRisers Hyderabad post a total in excess of 200.
Defending 202, Jaydev Unadkat provided an early breakthrough, dismissing Phil Salt. However, the home side continued to build partnerships and eventually took the game away.
Despite not getting across the line, there were quite a few positives to take away. David Payne, making his SRH debut, picked up two wickets, while Harsh Dubey returned with one. Nitish Reddy bowled with pace and great control, delivering two overs with the new ball.
After the match, Ishan Kishan reflected on the positives in the post-match interview, saying, “We’ll have to work a little harder, but we’ll get better with this as a team.”
Kolkata Knight Riders are up next for us on Thursday.
